Who built this?
Northstar was built by Chris Rawlinson, founder and CEO of 42courses. Here's how it came about.

The opposite of that school test
If you ever sat one of those standardised careers tests at school, you'll know how this goes. Mine told me I'd be a farmer. It told everyone else in my class they'd be farmers too. Careers advice back then had roughly the accuracy of a horoscope, without the charm.
This site is the opposite of that test. It asks you indirect, slightly odd questions, drawing on years of behavioural science and psychology, to tease out what you actually love rather than what you think you should say.
It began as a conversation with a customer. I wanted to show her how quickly you can bring an idea to life with AI, enjoyed building it far too much, and kept going until it was something you might genuinely find useful. As a parent working in tech, I worry about the young people entering work today, though the questions work just as well at 50 as they do at 15. Wherever you are, I hope you find your calling.
Why we started 42courses
We built 42courses to close the same gap: the one between academic education and the real world.
You learn from the people doing the job day in, day out, so what you get is how the best actually do it. Think of it as an internship with the crème de la crème: Rory Sutherland, Sir John Hegarty, Cindy Gallop and other brilliant minds.
Come and learn with us
If Northstar helped point you somewhere, 42courses can help you build the skills to get there, taught by people who do the work for real.
